The hunger strike for farmers’ demands enters its 18th day

Bajakhana,13 December   (Avtar Singh Malla) – In order to fulfill the demands from the previous farmers’ protests, the Joint Farmers’ Morcha, a non-political platform, and the Farmers and Workers’ Morcha have been holding protests at the Haryana-Punjab borders since February 13. Despite the central government ignoring the farmers’ demands, the movement launched a new action on November 26 when farmer leader Jagjeet Singh Dallewal started a hunger strike to push for these demands. Today marks the 18th day of the hunger strike.

Although the Punjab Police had arrested the farmer leader before he began the hunger strike, admitting him to the hospital, the government was forced to release him after the farmers warned of a siege. However, Dallewal resumed his hunger strike on the same day.

Today, in response to Dallewal’s deteriorating health and the lack of any communication from the central government, the farmers’ movement called for burning effigies of the central government. In this regard, farmers from villages in Bajakhana, Malla, Jhakkarwala, Doda, Ukandwala, Wara Bhika, Ghaniya, Romana Ajeet Singh, Vandar, and Lambwali, part of the BKU Ekta Sidhupur block, burned effigies of the Modi government and staged protests. The protests aimed to highlight their demands and express support for Jagjeet Singh Dallewal’s hunger strike.
