Jagraon, 13 December (Jaswinder Singh Dangi) – In response to the ongoing illegal mining activities taking place along the Sutlej River near Ludhiana and Jalandhar, a large number of people gathered today on the Jagraon-Jalandhar road for a protest organized by the Jamhoori Kisan Sabha Punjab, CITU Punjab, and Kisan Sabha. The protesters staged a dharna (sit-in) at a high-tech checkpoint, demanding immediate action against illegal mining.
Following this protest, officers from both districts assured the gathered farmers and protesters that swift action would be taken against the illegal mining operators. After three hours of negotiations with the officers from the Tehsil Mahitpur and Sidhuan Bet, as well as the police authorities from both districts, an agreement was reached. The officers committed to taking strict action against those involved in illegal mining within the next three days. They also promised to clear the sites where illegal mining was taking place and to take legal action against those responsible for carrying out and transporting mined material illegally.
The protest leaders, including CITU’s state leaders Comrade Amarnath Kum Kalan, Daljit Kumar Gora, and Jamhoori Kisan Sabha leaders Balraj Singh Kot Umra, Baljit Singh Gorsian, and Gurdeep Singh, presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Tehsildars. They warned that if the administration failed to fully implement this agreement, they would launch a larger campaign next week, with more intense actions planned.
