Struggles in Collecting Waste Highlighted by Councilor Manpreet Singh Happy

Bassi Pathana, 6 December   (Udey Dhiman):
Shiromani Akali Dal’s Ward No. 13 Councilor and social worker Manpreet Singh Happy addressed the media, shedding light on the dire state of equipment provided to sanitation workers in Nagar Council Bassi Pathana. He pointed out that the carts and trolleys used for waste collection are in a broken state, forcing workers to face immense difficulties while collecting garbage. Moreover, a significant amount of waste spills onto the streets during transportation due to the poor condition of the equipment.

Happy revealed that the carts are almost unusable, and the two small vehicles provided by the council for collecting wet and dry waste are equally ineffective. One vehicle has been out of service, while the other only functions manually, requiring workers to push it. He also noted that three months ago, the council procured electric rickshaws for sanitation purposes, but these have yet to be handed over to the workers. Due to a lack of use and proper charging facilities, these rickshaws may deteriorate further, resulting in wasted taxpayer money.

Manpreet Singh expressed concern over the appalling state of the city’s streets and drains, which are clogged with garbage. He criticized the council officials for neglecting their responsibilities and failing to provide the sanitation workers with adequate tools to perform their duties effectively. He highlighted that workers are struggling to manually pull carts under challenging circumstances, and this demonstrates the neglect of their well-being.

According to Manpreet Singh, Bassi Pathana’s development

has stagnated over the past two and a half years. He appealed to leaders from all political parties in the city to set aside personal differences and work collectively for the betterment of the city. He emphasized that sanitation workers can only maintain cleanliness if they are equipped with proper resources and support.
